DIY: Motorized Rotating Turntable Stand, 3d Printed

1:24 scale plastic model car displayed elevated from the turntable using a small platform on the cars center of gravity.

As my model car collection grew, I got tired of buying turntables for every new collectable. With this 3d printed turntable design, I simply buy the motors and hardware in bulk and then 3d print a new turntable as needed. I’ve gone bat shit crazy and place all of my collectibles on a 360 degree motorized rotating turntable stand, and save money in the process.

All of the turntables get connected to one power strip to turn them on or off from one switch. Once powered, the turntables rotate in sync and counter clockwise per the motors spec’s. Download the 3d model STL files from the link below and admire your collectables from all angles. (Because we men, ain’t we?)

All the 3d printed parts and required hardware which includes a synchronous AC motor and a 3 inch square swivel plate.

The turntable consists of four 3d printed parts and two required hardware parts; the synchronous AC motor and a 3 inch square swivel plate. The motors are sold in bulk quantities. They are available in different speeds or RPM’s and clockwise (CW) or counterclockwise (CCW) directions. The motors also come with a long shaft, and need to be cut down to 10.65mm, to properly match the height of the 3d printed base when assembled (see photo above). The swivel plate is used without modification; to achieve both a smooth rotation and for it’s heavy duty characteristics.

Low decibel dB noise level from the synchronous motor. All parts need to be printed in PETG filament.

The noise level coming from the turntable is minimal, even when running multiple units in a display cabinet. The recommended 3d filament type is PETG because it can resist the heat that is generated by the synchronous motor. Other filaments types like PLA will simply deform or warp once the motor begins to heat up. With PETG type filament, the turntable can be run for hours without warping the structure that connects the motor to the top platform.

One of the 3d printed parts requires gluing to the base. This method makes it easier to 3d print and saves filament.

The motor retainer is the 3d printed part pointed out in the photo below. It is the only part that requires to be glued to the turntable base. I chose to glue it together instead of 3d printing it as a part of the turntable base to save filament from being used on supports.

A mirror base centerpiece expands the 3d printed turntable’s footprint to display more items, such as these two 1:24 scale plastic model cars.

The 3d printed rotating display measures 4.13 inches X 1.7 inches and can fit a Hot Wheels sized car within its top platform. For 1:24 scale plastic model cars, I used a round 8 inch mirror centerpiece to expand the display footprint. As seen in the photo above; two 1:24 scale models can fit side to side.

A mirror centerpiece atop the turntable partially hides the base and creates a floating look with soft shadow.

The 8 inch mirror centerpiece partially conceals the turntable’s base and creates an appealing soft shadow underneath the mirror. As a result, it looks like a rotating floating platform.
